![]() This dictionary can be accessed for free online. Also on sale is the smaller 21st Century Dictionary of 1664 pages, where "the focus is on the English that people use today, and definitions are given in straightforward, accessible language". This edition is available for mobile use as an iPhone and iPad app. The twelfth edition of The Chambers Dictionary was published in August 2011 by Chambers Harrap Publishers Ltd and runs to 1936 pages. These jocular definitions were removed by the publisher in the 1970s, but many of them were reinstated in 1983 because of the affection in which they were held by readers. Examples of such definitions include those for éclair ("a cake, long in shape but short in duration") and middle-aged ("between youth and old age, variously reckoned to suit the reckoner"). It contains many more dialectal, archaic, unconventional and eccentric words than its rivals, and is noted for its occasional wryly humorous definitions. TCD is widely used by British crossword solvers and setters, and by Scrabble players (though it is no longer the official Scrabble dictionary). A second edition came out in 1898, and was followed in 1901 by a new compact edition called Chambers's Twentieth Century Dictionary. It was an expanded version of Chambers's Etymological Dictionary of 1867, compiled by James Donald. Chambers as Chambers's English Dictionary in 1872. (I am also putting this review on the other WordWeb App Store products I own, because they really are part of an integrated product. The Chambers Dictionary ( TCD) was first published by W. They are truly excellent for writers, academics, and other researchers. I have used these WordWeb softwares for 9 years (since 2009) before they were on the App Store. If you have not looked, check out the other offerings by this developer. But for everyday use this is a fantastic set of products. Of course it would be amaziang to have the entire Oxford English Dictionary, but that license is impossible to obtain and would cost $1,000. As far as content, it does not get any better than Oxford and Chambers. The content is very well organanized, and the interface is up-to-date with the latest improvements in MacOS. These WordWeb dictionaries (Chambers Thesaurus in this case) are basically an exceptional replacement for the built-indictionaries in MacOS. Very efficient interface, and great Chambers content To get the similar word-power in a physical book form, you would spend a lot more than that. ![]() Please note that to get the two apps you’re going to spend roughly $30 in total but I was more than okay with this price. These two apps are always open, side by side on their own desktop and are a central part of my writing toolkit. I ended up wanting something similar for simple definition and purchased the Chambers Dictionary to go along with it. I’ve found it to be amazingly useful, easy to use and one of my go to tools while writing. In a more in depth use model, you can use that field to start a journey through the massive collection of words and even phrases by clicking on a word that comes closest to what you’re looking for, and by repeating that dig around your word choices. In a standard use model you just type the word-the focus will always remain on the input text field so you can alt tab away, do whatever work you are doing, alt tab back and just start typing. ![]() I find it extremely powerful, having a wealth of synonyms and antonyms. I am a professional author and I’ve been using this app for several years. ![]()
